Rainforest Track

The Tarkine Rain forest Track has been explored and designed with the intention of bringing attention to the Tarkine's resplendent old growth rain forest. The track was originally tagged by the TNC (Tarkine National Coalition), a local conservation group campaigning for the Tarkine's protection as a National Park/World Heritage Area. Since then, we have upgraded the trail to make it accessible enough for our participants to experience. And what a wonderful experience it is! The track is little more than a series of coloured tags, leading through a garden-like open under storey and a towering rain forest canopy looming high above. Like entering a landscape of goblins and faeries, the Tarkine's rain forest transports people into a foreign world, one where a tapestry of rich greens is the backdrop for a full six days. And best of all, there's no one else around, well, at least until now we've never seen another person on the track. So, if you're a rain forest lover, contact us and book onto our tour of Tasmania's Tarkine rainforest track whilst this remote experience is still possible, we have no doubt that you'll love it. • Day One:
    Distance: 7kms
This Tasmanian tour commences as we drive from Launceston to Burnie and then head south to the track head, arriving at around 2pm. Upon entering the Tarkine, we begin a 3 hour walk along old forestry roads before disappearing into the old-growth rain forest. Camp is located on the banks of Mystery Creek.

    Day Two:
    Distance: 6kms
After breakfast, our tour continues deeper into the forest alongside the picturesque Mystery Creek. We make our way up a ridge, surrounded by giant Eucalyptus Oblique, or Stringy Barks. These sentinels of the forest are amongst the tallest hardwood trees in the world. After lunch, the forest changes and we meet groves of musk trees under a canopy of ancient Myrtles and Sassafras. The ridge gradually ascends to a soil rich plateau that provides the necessary fertility for the exceptional forest we will be experiencing over the following three days. It is at the beginning of this plateau that we make camp and you kick back and relax while your guides prepare a fabulous feast, mmm dehydrated baked beans, not really, it's a mild coconut curry tonight and it's good!

    Day Three:
    Distance: 7 kms.
We walk through to Tarkine falls camp. On route, we pass through a forest we've called the Octopuses garden. The Myrtles here lift up beyond the soil and stand on their roots, giving them the appearance of octopuses walking the land. "Id like to be, under the sea, in a" you get the picture! After crossing a number of pristine streams, we come across the Shrine. The Shrine is a zen-like waterfall that cascades off the edge of a plateau, creating an energising and invigorating place to stop for lunch. "Ahhh, how's the serenity?" Before arriving at camp, we strike a patch of the infamous Horizontal forest of Tasmania. On arriving at camp, you can take a quick dip under the refreshing waters of Tarkine Falls. Tarkine falls is a gorgeous 15m waterfall that cascades over columns of black basalt rock.

    Day Four:
    Distance: 6 kms.
Today you choose, laze around camp and bathe beneath Tarkine Falls, or come for a day walk to tour a button grass peak and get panoramic views. From atop the button grass peak we get 360 degree views of the Tarkine's rain forest. To the North, valley after valley of pristine rain forest rolls out to the horizon, to the South, lies the great expanse of rain forest that has made the Tarkine internationally significant as a remnant, Gondwanan forest sanctuary. After lunch, we head back to camp for another night at Tarkine Falls.

    Day Five:
    Distance: 5 kms.
The route follows Waterfall Creek before arriving at Heaven for lunch. Heaven is a pristine swimming hole surrounded by cascading waterfalls. This beautiful natural monument provides a remarkable backdrop for lunch and an opportunity for basking around the natural pool. Heavens just great, and there's no test or anything like that to get in! From heaven, we walk another hour to our last camp.

    Day Six:
    Distance: 6 kms
Our tour of Tasmania's Tarkine concludes as we make our way out of the forest and cross the Lyons and Arthur River to meet our pick up vehicle. The pace of walking quickens here as we emerge out of the old growth forest onto old forestry trails. We cross the Lyons and Arthur rivers and are greeted by a lunch of fresh breads, cheeses fruit and condiments mmm! Pick up is at approximately 3.00pm and we arrive back in Launceston at around 6pm.
